Gluten Free Beers Update 2025

Why Are More of Our Beers Gluten-Free?

You might have noticed more of our beers now have 'Gluten Free' on the label or at the taps. You might be wondering why so many of our beers are becoming gluten-free. Have we turned our backs on barley, wheat, oats, and rye?

Fear not! We haven't compromised any of our ingredients or recipes. We still use the same quality ingredients we've always used. We aim to make our beers accessible to as many people as possible. To achieve this, we've added a special enzyme (more on that later) to our beers, which breaks down the gluten proteins that come from barley, wheat, oats and rye, without compromising the flavour or body of our beers.

Our labels will still say that the beer contains ingredients that contain gluten (including barley, wheat, oats and rye), but you can be assured that the beer doesn't contain gluten. We routinely have our beers independently tested to ensure gluten levels are below 20ppm, the legal threshold for gluten-free classification, before being released.

Which Beers are Gluten-Free?

If the beer says Gluten Free on the label or tap badge, you can be sure it's gluten-free. We do have existing label stock that we are working through, which does not declare the beer as gluten-free. Whilst we use these labels, we are printing GF on the bottom of the can and on the date code area on bottles on batches that are gluten-free. We appreciate that this is a little confusing, but in order to reduce waste, we feel it is best to use the labels rather than dispose of them.

How Can You Tell Our Beer is Gluten-Free?

  • If it says “Gluten Free” on the label, it is gluten-free.
  • If it doesn’t say “Gluten Free” on the label but has “GF” on the date stamp, it is gluten-free.
  • If you're in a pub, bar, or restaurant, the Tap Badge or Pumpclip will say "Gluten Free".

What Enzyme Are We Using?

To make our beers gluten-free, we're using a natural enzyme that breaks down specific gluten proteins, thus allowing us to create gluten-free beers without switching to gluten-free cereals. This enzyme ensures that our beers maintain their delicious flavour and body while being accessible to those with gluten sensitivities. This innovative approach allows us to offer the same great taste with the added benefit of being gluten-free.

The enzyme is a proline-specific endoprotease that only degrades proteins with proline amino acids. The chain of amino acids forming the gluten protein is broken down into harmless peptides, making beer gluten-free.
